In Ethiopi\u00eb stond dit jaar het thema \u2018inclusief onderwijs voor dove mensen\u2019 centraal. Inclusief of ge\u00efntegreerd onderwijs houdt in dat dove kinderen niet op een dovenschool maar op een reguliere school onderwijs volgen. Dit is een mooi streven maar in een land als Ethiopi\u00eb niet meteen vanzefsprekend omdat reguliere scholen vaak niet over de middelen beschikken om dove kinderen van goed onderwijs te voorzien. In Ethiopi\u00eb zijn er bijvoorbeeld maar heel weinig docenten die gebarentaal beheersen, terwijl die docenten hard nodig zijn om de lesstof over te brengen aan dove kinderen. Omdat er sterke aanwijzingen waren dat de Ethiopische overheid op korte termijn ge\u00efntegreerd onderwijs op nationaal niveau door wil voeren, heeft DDIA (Deaf Development and Information Association) met steun van Beletu een workshop georganiseerd waarbij ruim 300 beleidsmakers en vertegenwoordigers van de dovengemeenschap met elkaar in discussie gingen. Tijdens de workshop promootte het Ministerie van Onderwijs ge\u00efntegreerd onderwijs door succesvolle voorbeelden uit andere landen aan te halen, waar ge\u00efntegreerd onderwijs vaak beter geregeld is dan in Ethiopi\u00eb. Vertegenwoordigers van ENAD (The Ethiopian National Association of the Deaf) en DDIA benadrukten op hun beurt dat de dovengemeenschap te weinig betrokken wordt bij besluitvorming over doven onderwijs. Ook benadrukten zij dat de benodigde middelen voor ge\u00efntegreerd onderwijs (zoals docenten die gebarentaal beheersen) momenteel nog niet voldoende aanwezig zijn in Ethiopi\u00eb. Dankzij de workshop zijn het Ministerie van Onderwijs en de dovengemeenschap nu met elkaar in gesprek om te bekijken hoe het onderwijs voor dove kinderen in Ethiopi\u00eb het best georganiseerd kan
